Whether it’s for a competition, a school assessment task or just for fun, writing about topics you are passionate about is one of the best ways to create a compelling story. Reading also expands your vocabulary, develops your comprehension skills, and builds your understanding of how authors use literary devices in order to explore different themes and ideas. The more you read, the more you are exposed to different styles, structures, narrative voices and literary techniques.If your child is looking to improve their creative writing, we offer the following tips: Regardless of whether they are a seasoned storytelling veteran or if this is their first attempt at writing a narrative, we want to give every student a chance to have their voice heard and their creativity encouraged. Entries are being judged not only on their technical command of language, but also on how imaginative their concept is. Most importantly, we urge all students to have a go at submitting their stories. Not only will the winner receive a cash prize, but their work will be published in Voiceworks, a national literary journal that features art and writing by young Australians. ![]() We believe that creativity and the courage to share one’s stories with the world should be rewarded, and hope that this competition will be an opportunity for students to have an audience for their work, a tangible goal to write towards, and to be the first step in their journey to entering further writing competitions or submitting their work for publication.
